With Valentine’s Day coming up, now is a good time to finally let the cat of the bag. Dating is doubly difficult for men than it is for women. The rules of the game have shifted in favour of the women decisively so much so that some men have completely given up on dating, and instead finding succour in video games or apps like Secret and Tinder. Here are a few reasons why dating is a woman’s game and why that’s not such a great thing after all.
A man is burdened with expectations right from the beginning. He has to be brave, charming, funny, sensitive, emotional, built well, etc. Sinking under the weight of so many expectations, men who fail in some of these areas will find themselves isolated in the dating market for no other reason except that they couldn’t satisfy ALL the expectations thrust upon them. Women, on the other hand, simply have to show up and let their femininity do the talking.
A perennial bugbear with men at all stages of a relationship is the need to prove their loyalty and commitment to the woman they love. Sometimes this leads to bigger fights over the most mundane thing like not saying ‘I love you’ to your partner in a single day leading to the blame game. Please ladies, we don’t accuse you of infidelity every chance we have. Do return the favour to us too.
Satisfying Contradictory Societal Norms
In what kind of world would a man be manly enough to fix the broken wires in the house and yet also wake up in the morning to make breakfast for his partner to show how loving he is. He must be a gentleman at all times yet he must know how to rock his woman’s life in the bed. When he fights in public it’s an issue but when he doesn’t do anything, he’ a wimp. Seriously women, what kind of men do we have to be to have you in our lives?
With the rise of feminism and disposable income among the fairer sex, one would have thought that chivalry was on its way out. But this is another roadblock for guys. Most of us do not know how far you want us to be chivalrous. We aren’t sure if pulling the chair for you is going too far or whether paying for the first few dates offends you. In an ideal world, we would know what to do but your mysteries have us tangled up in knots over how chivalrous we really need to be!
Too Much Pressure On Guys
Let’s not even debate this. From having a high-paying job with great career prospects to reading a woman’s mind every time and everything in between, the expectations placed on guys today is enormous. Men need to be successful, smart, sexy, dependable and go-getters if they need a chance to score a date.
Fit Into A Stereotype
The general stereotype about guys is that they are either marriage material or mama’s boy or too cool to be tamed and so on. It is demeaning to fit guys into a stereotype because even they have distinct personalities. Rather than understanding men, women today find it easier to slot them into a stereotype and then decide whether they want to see him again or not. No such pressures exist for women though. They can take their time to open up and dare you slot them into a category!
No Need To Be Understood
Women are always cribbing about not being understood. But, in fact, it is men who are taken for granted. Once in a while at least, we guys too would like to talk freely without being judged. We want to share things but the fear of sounding like a sissy and societal pressures about stoically taking everything thrown at us ‘like a man’ is what bugs us.
