Majula Raises Voice Against Jail Corruption But Gets Killed

A death case has occurred in Byculla jail, Mumbai. Manjula Shete a 32 year old murder convict wanted to expose corruption within Byculla jail states her elder brother. When Manjula she was about to expose corruption in boundaries of the jail, she was beaten to death.

In 2004, Manjula was convicted of killing her sister in law. Due to severe injuries caused by burns, Shete’s sister in law had succumbed in 1996. Before that she has accused Manjula Shete and her mother for attempt made to kill her. A trial took place after which the 18 year old Manjula alongwith her mother were put in the Yerwada jail in Pune. Manjula worked in Navjeevan High School as a teacher. In 2016 her mother passed away due to old age.

In the mean time, Manjula continued imprisonment at the jail. Due to good behavior from an inmate she was promoted to warden. Two months ago, her transfer was made to Byculla jail and she was waiting to complete her punishment term within few months.

Manjula had complained against the jailor as he provided breakfast to just 200 female inmates, not all. A few jail workers had informed her brother about the same.
Manjula’s complaint did not go well with authorities of the jail and they assaulted her so brutally that she lost her life. According to the post mortem report, sharp metal like object was inserted into her private parts and she had 11 to 13 contusions on her body. Under section 34 and 302 of the Indian Penal Code, a case has been registered at the Nagpada Police Station. Shete’s brother has made an appeal that those responsible for the murder should be punished. Jail authorities have not responded when contacted for confirmation.
