Dr. Ganesh Rakh who runs Medicare Hospital Foundation Trust in the Hadapsar suburb of Pune is on a mission, a mission to save the girl child.
How does he do that? He waives-off the entire hospital expenses if the newborn is a girl.
If that isn’t impressive enough, the entire hospital cerebrates the birth of the girl child by distributing sweets.
So far the 25-bed hospital has extended this service to more than 430 baby girls.
Dr Rakh, son of a labourer said he wanted to fight the evil of female foeticide which is rampant in Maharashtra.
He says he has witnessed a lot of parents and relatives asking for a discount on medical bills if it was a girl child, but not in the case of a boy. While accepting that the initiative has taken a hit on the hospital’s finances, Dr Rakh says his efforts will continue. Calling his efforts a baby step, he has also urged some 5,000 doctors in India to follow the initiative
