Gillian Anderson Makes a Bold Fashion Statement at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards
Gillian Anderson, renowned for her role in Sex Education, made waves as she graced the 2024 Golden Globe Awards red carpet in a one-of-a-kind custom ivory strapless gown by Gabriela Hearst. The standout feature of the gown? It was adorned with intricately embroidered motifs of vaginas.
Explaining her unconventional fashion choice, the 55-year-old actress shared with Deadline, “[I wore it] for so many reasons,” adding that the design was “brand appropriate.” In a conversation with PEOPLE, Anderson expanded on the gown’s inspiration, noting that it had a floral theme, emphasizing, “it’s covered in peonies!” The meticulous embroidery, according to the label, took 3.5 hours for each motif.
Accessorizing the daring ensemble, Anderson adorned herself with Chopard jewels, including an 18k white gold necklace featuring a 10-carat pear-shaped yellow diamond and nearly 30 carats of diamonds. Her earrings, in 18k yellow gold and 18k white gold, showcased four pear-shaped yellow diamonds totaling 15 carats of yellow diamonds, paired with white diamonds totaling 0.50 carats. Completing the look, she wore a bracelet in 18k white gold with 13 carats of diamonds and a ring in 18k yellow gold set with diamonds.
The pièce de résistance of Anderson’s glamorous appearance was her hair. While maintaining a few wisps of gray roots at the crown, she embraced the naturalness of her hair, styling the rest in a soft wave. Her makeup was kept subtle, featuring a soft smokey eye and a pink lip.
Known for her ability to balance glamour and comfort, Anderson has a penchant for relaxed attire when off the red carpet. In a 2021 Instagram Live Q&A with fans, she openly expressed her aversion to bras, stating, “I don’t wear a bra anymore. I don’t wear a bra. I can’t wear a bra. I can’t, no. I can’t.” The Crown star humorously added, “I’m sorry, but I don’t care if I reach my belly button, my breasts reach my belly button. I’m not wearing a bra anymore. It’s just too f—— uncomfortable.”
As for her go-to outfit during the COVID pandemic, Anderson admitted she would opt for “comfortable” black track pants and a black hoodie every day if given the choice. Embracing a laid-back style, she quipped, “[It’s] probably the same as my go-to out-of-lockdown outfit. I’m so lazy.”
